Indianapolis is the capital city of the U.S. state of Indiana, and the county seat of Marion County, Indiana. The 2000 Census counted the city's population at 781,870. It is Indiana's most populous city and is the 13th largest city in the U.S., the third largest city in the Midwest, and the second most populous Capital in the U.S., behind Phoenix, Arizona. Indianapolis has hosted numerous sporting events including; the 1987 Pan American Games, both Men's and Women's NCAA Basketball Tournaments, the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, the United States Grand Prix (2000-2007), and is perhaps most famous for the annual Indianapolis 500. The labels of The Amateur Sports Capital of the World, and The Racing Capital of the World, have both been applied to the city.
The Indianapolis metropolitan area is among the fastest growing in the Midwest and the United States, with growth centered in the surrounding counties of Boone, Hamilton, Hendricks, and Johnson. Hamilton and Hendricks Counties are currently the fastest growing counties in Indiana. Currently, the Combined Statistical Area stands at 1,984,644, making it the 23rd largest in the U.S.
Eli Lilly and Company is a global
pharmaceutical company and one of the world's largest corporations. Eli Lilly's global headquarters is located in
Indianapolis,
Indiana, in the
United States. The company was founded in
1876 by a pharmaceutical
chemist,
Eli Lilly, after whom the company was ultimately named.
Colonel Eli Lilly, a pharmacist who had served as a Union officer in the American Civil War, acquired a laboratory on Pearl Street in Indianapolis in 1876 and started Eli Lilly and Company. His innovative process of gelatin-coating pills helped establish the success of the company. When Eli Lilly died in 1898, his son Josiah K. Lilly Sr. took control of the company. Josiah inherited his father's civic mindedness and ordered the company to send much needed medicine to support recovery efforts following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
Among the company's major pharmaceutical breakthroughs are cephalosporin, erythromycin, insulin, and, with Prozac (fluoxetine), the world's first selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor for the treatment of clinical depression. Among other distinctions, Lilly is the world's largest manufacturer and distributor of medications used in a broad range of psychiatric and mental health-related conditions, including clinical depression, generalized anxiety disorder, narcotic addiction, insomnia, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and others.
The Indianapolis Colts are a professional American football team based in Indianapolis. The team is part of the South Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The Colts have won five NFL Championships, including two Super Bowl titles, most recently in 2006 in Super Bowl XLI against the Chicago Bears.
The Colts relocated from Baltimore in 1984, and began their stay in Indianapolis winning 90 of 228 games through the 1997 season, including 5 playoff games. Since Jim Irsay assumed control of the franchise in 1998 after the death of his father Bob Irsay, the team has become only the second in league history to win 12 games or more in four consecutive seasons.
After 20+ years of playing at the RCA Dome, the Colts will begin play in Lucas Oil Stadium starting in the fall of 2008. In December 2004, the City of Indianapolis and Colts owner Jim Irsay agreed to a new stadium deal that will benefit both the city and the team at an estimated cost of $675 million. In a deal estimated at $122 million, Lucas Oil Products won the naming rights to the stadium for 20 years.

Birch Evans Bayh III (born December 26, 1955) is the
junior United States Senator from
Indiana. He is a member of the
Democratic Party. Bayh was born in
Shirkieville, Indiana to Marvella Belle Hern and
Birch Bayh. Bayh attended the prestigious
St. Albans School in
Washington, D.C. for high school. He then went on to graduate with honors in business economics and public policy from the
Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 1978, where he was a member of
Phi Kappa Psi, and received his
Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from the
University of Virginia in 1981. He clerked for a federal court judge and entered a private law practice in
Indianapolis. He has an honorary J.D. degree from Golden Gate University School of Law.
Bayh was elected Indiana's Secretary of State in 1986, where he served from 1987 to 1989. Bayh was first elected Governor of Indiana in 1988, defeating Frank O'Bannon in the primary, and defeating John Mutz in the general election. He was re-elected governor in 1992 with the highest percentage of the vote in a statewide election in modern Indiana history. Bayh was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1998 to the seat that was once held by his father. He won with 64% of the vote, the largest victory margin ever by a Democrat in a U.S. Senate race in Indiana, defeating former Fort Wayne Mayor Paul Helmke. He easily won reelection in 2004 defeating Prof. Marvin Scott.
